Small Business Saturday: Detroit Businesses to Support
I cannot believe we’re more than halfway through November. Time has been such a strange concept this year! For those of you that know me, you know I absolutely LOVE the holiday season. And although I know things are going to look a lot different this year in terms of gathering, I still am putting in the effort to make sure I’m in the holiday spirit. My tree is up, I’ve been listening to a bunch of Christmas music, and have even started buying a few gifts already. Trying not to have a repeat of last year when I was buying things at the last minute! Lol.
Speaking of gifts, do you or have you ever participated in Small Business Saturday? Held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year, the shopping holiday encourages retail-lovers to patronize small and local businesses as opposed to the traditional big-box retailers. I’m so happy and excited to be partnering with the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) to highlight some local Detroit businesses for you to shop from this season!
If you listen to my podcast, it’s no secret that I love shouting out Metro Detroit business owners and their products. So when DEGC reached out, I jumped for joy! On their website, there’s a directory of businesses to check out that are participating in Small Business Saturday. It’s neatly categorized by type (arts & culture, retail, food, health & beauty, etc.), and each businesses website and social channels are linked for convenience and an easy shopping experience. I was familiar with a handful of businesses on the directory already, but there were so many I hadn’t heard of before! I basically clicked on just about every website to check out what everyone had, lol.
Everyone had such great products to offer, and it honestly was hard to choose where I wanted to shop from, but here’s a list of the businesses I patronized online:
Olive Seed
Olive Seed was founded by Latricia Wright in 2008 with the goal of educating people about the transformational power of nutrition. The company offers wellness services such as acupuncture & massage, tea & meditation, cooking classes and more. They also sell a wide variety of loose leaf teas, herbal honeys, and herbal soaps! I bought a bunch of teas to give as gifts and to keep for myself.
The Royce
Who doesn’t love a good bottle of wine? The Royce is a retail shop and bar with over 500 different types of wines! They feature wines from producers that practice organic, biodynamic and low-intervention wine-making. My parents are big wine drinkers, so I got them a gift card so that they can try out some new varieties that they haven’t had before.
Eldorado General Store
I can’t believe I’d never heard of Eldorado General Store. Their products are very aligned with my aesthetic! Founded in 2013, the store’s mission is to support local artists and makers and female entrepreneurs around the country. I love all of their jewelry offerings. I’m a sucker for gold, so all of the rings and layered necklaces really caught my eye! I know I’m supposed to be focused on gift-giving right now, but I couldn’t help getting some pieces for myself.
I’ll be doing some more shopping on the actual day of Small Business Saturday, but I wanted to share what I had found so far with you all! It’s always important to support our local shop owners and entrepreneurs, but it’s especially important this year due to the effects that the pandemic has had on our communities. Leave a comment below and let me know what businesses you’ll be supporting this holiday season!
